After doing her BBA from University of Toronto and a Mutual
Funds course while in her final year, Mahindru joined Scotiabank
in January 2008. She has never felt that her ethnicity or gender
were a barrier to success.
“Scotiabank rewards enterprise and hard work,” says Rania
Llewellyn, Vice-President, Multicultural Banking at Scotiabank.
“Scotiabank is a great supporter of diversity in the workplace and
the male-female ratio is almost evenly balanced. The opportunities
an employee has for career growth at Scotiabank are phenomenal.”

As a relative newcomer to the country, Mahindru knows what it
can be like to start fresh.

“When I first opened an account at another bank, they wouldn’t
give me a credit card until I had built up a credit history. But how
does one build a credit history without credit? It was a vicious
circle. I was able to get a Visa card only after being able to show
one year of part-time work at a grocery store. Now, under Scotiabank
StartRightTM Program, brand new immigrants are eligible
for credit cards and can start building a credit history right away.”
A client brought his parents and siblings to Scotiabank. Sensing
that they were not too fluent in English, Mahindru spoke to them
in Hindi.
“They were barely a week old in Canada and so happy to have
another within India, too,” she concludes sagely.
Mahindru knows some people are facing difficulties in the
current financially challenging times.
“People have lost jobs, or have reduced work hours and are
finding it difficult to keep up with their payments. We find the
best solution for each client based on their individual situation
and needs. When someone says, ‘I need your help,’ they are
trusting me with everything. Clients rely on Scotiabank for the
best advice and service, and I take this responsibility very
seriously. I feel good when I am able to help someone in a
difficult situation.”
She also feels good guiding her younger brothers Tarundeep, 19,
and Sonaldeep, 13, in their financial decisions. Tarun already has
an account at Scotiabank, and Sonal is excited about opening one.
The family will celebrate Canada Day with family
friends, watching fireworks and enjoying a backyard
BBQ. “It’s a good day to give thanks for the
Happy
opportunities we’ve been given in this country.” Canada Day!

She understands the cultural shock some immigrants may feel
upon landing in a new country where the social norms might be
different from what they were used to.
“The weather takes some getting used to, too!” she laughs. “And
then some people are welcoming, some aren’t. But then that
