Client recommends
Scotiabank StartRight
Program to friends
Deepak Razdan describes himself as a happy Scotiabank
StartRightTMProgram customer. He met Pankaj Mehra, Director,
India and South Asia Markets, in Delhi at a Scotiabank seminar and
stayed in touch with him through the process of moving to Canada.
“I opened my account with Scotiabank while still in India. I landed
in Toronto and asked my friend to drive me to the Scotiabank branch
at Highway 10 and Ray Lawson in Brampton. Within five minutes,
Branch Manager Intesar Khan had my account operational, and I
had my cheque book and a credit card. I’d heard how important it
was to get a credit card to establish my credit history and also that
some people find it difficult to get one – but I had no such problem!”
His wife Kavita was delighted to find that the Scotiabank
StartRightTM Program entitled them to a small safety deposit
box, free for one year.
Scotiabank helps newcomers make a hassle-free start
“Scotiabank’s StartRightTM Program lived up to our expectations
and beyond,” says Razdan, who now recommends it to his friends
– those who are in the process of immigrating as well as those
who are already here.
Razdan, a senior editor at a medical transcription company based
in Delhi, came to Canada in January this year. He and his wife
Kavita, who ran a catering business, chose Canada for a better
life and the options it offered their daughters for higher studies.
Friends in Canada helped him feel at home from day one,
allaying concerns Kavita may have had about how her husband
would fare in a new country. She stayed back in Delhi for their
daughter Deepali to finish her grade 10 exam, and joined him
last month.
“I called her every day, twice a day sometimes,” says Razdan.
“I missed her and my daughters terribly and counted down to
their arrival. Each night I’d cross another day on the calendar.
But she knew I was with friends, she was confident on that
TM
count.”
A friend was instrumental in Razdan’s landing a job within
a month of arriving in Canada.
“He said he needed someone to join him and I had a job!”
Razdan marvels. “Another friend, Vidyabhushan Dhar –
younger than me but like an older brother here in Canada – is
showing me the ropes. The other day he told me I had to get my
driving licence and dropped me at the test centre. My friends
have been a great support network.”
It is with these good friends that Razdan is sharing his
Scotiabank StartRight TMProgram experience.
Mehra tells him that his feedback as one of the first Scotiabank
StartRightTM Program clients in India helped the bank refine the
program to improve the customer experience still further.
Deepanshi, 9, enjoyed her first days at school. Deepali, who had
to wait until the end of June to be assessed, is missing her
friends. Her parents are confident that she will soon settle in and
make new friends.
The family is looking forward to the Canada Day weekend to
explore that most Canadian of attractions, Niagara Falls.

Harleen Mahindru was a fan of Scotia® Welcome to Canada
Program even before she joined the bank.
She moved to Canada from New Delhi, India in 2003 with her
parents and two younger brothers.
“When my parents were ready to purchase a home, they went to
Scotiabank,” she says.
Now employed as a personal banking officer at Scotiabank’s
Bathurst and Teston branch in Vaughan, Ontario, Mahindru points
out the advantages of the Scotia Welcome to Canada Program and
other features that the Scotiabank StartRightTMProgram offers new
immigrants.
Pankaj Mehra, Director, India and South Asia Markets, says
that newcomers who have the funds to make a 35 per cent down
payment and have no derogatory credit history could secure a
mortgage with Scotiabank.
