Vive la difference!
Toronto’s ‘a la Cart’ food vendors are giving visitors
to the downtown core a taste of the city’s diversity.
Have you tried the fare yet?
Street food heaven
Jerk chicken, biryani, chutney,
pita, chapatti, naan, rice, roasted
corn...I feel like I’m in street
food heaven! I’m all for more
colourful, different food on our
streets.

What about shwarma?
I read that the newly licensed
vendors were going to offer,
among other choices, souvlaki.
How about that other street
food favourite,. shwarma?

Vital element
The one thing missing in
downtown Toronto was good,
inexpensive street food. When
we took visitors to the CN
Tower, ROM or the AGO, etc., I
thought it would be nice if we
could sample a variety of
cuisines instead of having to
step into a coffee shop. Toronto
is a vibrant city, home to many
different cultures and this is a
great way to introduce a very
vital part of any culture – its
food – to others.

Reminds me of Chowpatty!
All these choices being offered by Toronto street vendors
remind me of Chowpatty! But I feel they have left out a few
important ones. How about pav bhaji and vada pav? And on the
lakeshore, chaat stalls!

A happy vegetarian
I’m vegetarian, and every
time my sons stopped for a hot
dog on the street, I used to wish
there was something for me,
too! Well, now there is! I think
‘a la Cart’ is an excellent idea.
Whoever thought of it deserves
a pat on the back. Being a vegetarian
is no more an impediment
in streetside feasting!

It’s a messy idea
I think the idea is good in
theory, but will not translate
well into practice. I mean, can
you imagine eating biryani or
chicken and roti, etc., while walking
down a street? It’s going to
get really messy and will put off
more people than it will lure.
Also, who will clean up all the
food spills on the street?
