why clients return to

advances and to cash cheques.
“It’s like taking an advance
from a friend,” says the Branch
Manager of the CashMoney branch
at Main and Bovaird in Brampton.
CashMoney is a financial institution
that functions pretty
much like a bank, explains Dada.
“Except that we can, in addition,
do payday advances that
banks can’t. We also cash postdated
cheques. Banks are not going
to give you a small loan if you
need cash in a hurry, but we do.”
CashMoney gives money in
advance against pay roll cheques,
child tax benefit cheques,
employment insurance cheques,
insurance cheques (paid by the
insurance company only), Canada
Pension Plan and old age security
cheques, etc.
“We don’t do credit checks.
Pretty much everyone with a
steady source of income, either
full-time or part-time employment,
qualifies for payday advances,”
says Dada.
“Sometimes banks put holds
on cheques, you can’t access the
cash right away. Bring it to us
and you have the funds you
need when you need them.”
Which is a great boon for
people in the current challenging
financial times, she adds.
“Prices are going up, hours
at work are getting cut. There
are single moms bringing up
kids on one income, people
who have been laid off and are
struggling to make ends meet
on employment insurance...
people are finding it hard to
manage finances.
“Say you are someone who
gets paid every other Friday.
You get the pay cheque, pay
your bills, buy groceries...and
then your car breaks down. Or
you need to send money home
urgently. Whom are you going

cent of a person’s last pay
cheque. And when that is paid
back, the person qualifies for
another advance right away.
Dada sees all age groups at
her location. At one end of the
spectrum are senior citizens
who spend a large portion of
their OAS and CPP cheques on
gifts for grandchildren and then
need cash for their own needs.
And at the other, young people
in need of ‘weekend’ cash.
There are also those who use
payday advances to pay down
high interest credit card debts.
