THE HAUNTED HEART
hy is a haunted house scary? Because it hides
something unknown, perhaps even deadly. It has
Wdoors,
numerous coat closets, cabinets, false walls, trap
attics and basements.
There are corners and shadows where the monster lies
in wait.
Kris Lundgaard, in his book The Enemy Within, talks about
a different haunted house – the haunted house within you:
your heart. He talks about the haunted heart and its hidden horrors.
People are afraid. Many people consult their horoscopes,
palm readers, and astrologers. They try to manipulate their
life through rituals and incantations in order to feel safe
and secure.
But instead of alleviating their fears, these feed their
fears. Isn’t it peoples’ fears which drive them to these actions?
A man, Sohil*, calls from prison:
“Can you come to visit me in prison? I need to talk with you.”
I sit on one side of the window; he is on the other. We
each have a phone in hand to talk. He is upset as he talks
about kala jadoo (black magic). He says bad things are
happening to him. Another lady expresses concern about
evil spirits in her house. She is looking for a formula to
dispel the spirits.
What are we to say about these things?
The problem is that man has a haunted heart. Man’s
heart, by nature, is enslaved to evil. This explains the
hidden horrors and fears in mankind. If it ended there,
there would be no hope.
But the good news is that the Lord Jesus has the power
to break the darkness. He is the light of the world. When
the light shines, the darkness vanishes. The light of the
world, Jesus Himself, suffered the darkness, the horrors
of separation from God on the cross for the sake of sinners
like us. Those who trust in Him, have their sins forgiven
and are filled with His light.
Gone are the horoscopes! Gone is the fear! The light
exposes the futility of trying to secure your future through
fortune tellers. It’s all ‘of the darkness.’ Believers in Christ
have this certainty: “That I am not my own, but belong –
body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful Saviour
Jesus Christ.”
Nothing, nothing at all, can separate us from God’s love
in Jesus Christ .
