Desi News Corp - IndexDesi News Corp - Desi News - May 2009 - Indexpapers came through, Baskar
says his father and brother
advised him to move to Canada
with his wife rather than coming
alone first, finding a job
and then getting her to join
him. Enjoy both the hardships
and the happiness together,
they said.
“I have a job. Financial matters
which can be overwhelming
for a new immigrant were
handled with such ease
thanks to the friendly and helpful
people at Scotiabank. Honestly,
I don’t see us facing any
hardships,” says Baskar.
“StartRight TM helped us skip
a few steps by starting us off
on the right note while we
were still in India – I call it the
Dummies’ Guide to Banking!
StartRight TM opened the doors
for us to our new life.”
The Raos enjoyed their first
Canadian winter this year.
“Shovelling was fun – I was

Sushma thinks Spring is
beautiful and is looking forward

“We love Canada,” says
Sushma. “Bangalore is multicultural
in the local sense,
Canada is multicultural in the
international context. We fit
right in. We feel at home!”

apply their own experiences as
new immigrants in their interactions

With several years of experience

Punjab, India, Thind landed a

at Pearson International.
FINANCIAL ADVISOR, 284 QUEEN ST. E., BRAMPTON • 905-453-7653
“When I got my first cheque
a week later, I didn’t have an
account to deposit it in!” he
recalls with a laugh.
Today, a financial advisor
at Scotiabank’s Queen Street
branch in Brampton, Thind
advises newcomers on issues
vital to settling in well in their
new country.
“I see people who have been
in Canada for three or four
years and still don’t have a credit
card. They come from cash
societies where credit card use
has yet to catch on in a big way.
I tell them to apply for a no-fee
credit card under Scotiabank’s
StartRight TM Program; that without
a credit history, they will
find it next to impossible to get
a mortgage or a car loan.”
He says people often feel
more comfortable discussing
their finances in their own language
and he is happy to talk
money in Punjabi.
“Coming from a similar
background, I feel I understand
their needs better.”
Aware of the value South
Asians place on education,
he also advises them to invest
in RESPs to finance their
children’s higher studies.
Thind is active in the community
and says people will
often approach him at the
gurudwara or at malls and
parks and ask for financial tips.
“I tell them no investment
is intrinsically good or bad in
itself. At Scotiabank, we look at
the complete picture – at the
time frame the investor is
looking at, his or her objectives
and risk tolerance. Based
on this profile, we customize
an investment package for
each client.
“Of course, I tell all newcomers
to open a bank account
and that getting a credit history
going is a must-must!”
Thind came to Canada in
2004 for better opportunities with
his wife Ranjit Ranjit and daughter
