A SPECIAL SECTION FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS
New to Canada? Need help?
Need to improve your
spoken and written English?
Citizenship and Immigration
Canada (CIC) offers permanent
residents to Canada
the opportunity to learn English
or French at no charge.
This program is called
Language Instruction for
Newcomers to Canada, or
LINC, and is fully funded by
CIC. A number of service providers
and organizations
throughout Ontario provide inclass
language instruction
services so newcomers can
improve their English skills
and adjust to life in Canada.
Before enrolling in classes,
each newcomer is first assessed
by a LINC assess-
ment centre. The assessor asks
a series of questions, both
written and oral, to determine
the type of class and level the
newcomer should be placed
in. The newcomer is placed in
a class that meets their needs
at a convenient location.
• In order to be assessed and
to register for an English-language
class at no-charge, visit

various organizations, groups

CIC’s settlement agencies
regularly run workshops
which help newcomers orient

workers’ rights and employment

each JSW program varies, most
are completed within three or
