Several Kashmiri bodies have opposed Rahul Dholakia’s
Lamhaa. The film deals with terrorism and its effects in Jammu
and Kashmir. Dholakia, who his written and directed the film,
said, “Kashmiri Pandits, Kashmiri Muslims and even a few groups
abroad have protested against the film. I have made the script
more fictitious, so that it does not hurt anyone’s sentiments.”

Sanjay Dutt was seen at a function organized by Mulayam
Singh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh, fuelling speculation that the actor,
who has expressed a desire to enter politics, might be the SP-
Congress candidate for the Lucknow or Mainpuri parliamentary
seat. However, under Election Commission rules, unless the
Supreme Court overturns Dutt’s conviction, he is debarred for
life from contesting since he has been convicted for illegal
possession of an AK-47 and destruction of evidence.

Sneha Ullal, better known as Aishwarya Rai’s lookalike, is back
with Kaash Mere Hote. She insists it was a conscious decision on her
part to let acting take a back seat after Aryan because she felt that
she was too young and wanted to be mature enough to handle the
film industry. “Honestly, I did not even know how to talk to the
media! Today I can confidently say that I will not do a role if I am
not respected as an actor.” On being compared to Rai, Ullal says,
“Though I like it personally because she is beautiful, it is unfair to
me professionally. Had I made my bow with an actor other than
Salman Khan in Lucky, would I have been compared to her?”

The rivalry between the two superstars of Bollywood – Aamir
and Shah Rukh – is once again hogging the limelight. On the
eve of the release of Ghajini, Aamir Khan said he has no qualms
about working with Shah Rukh. “But SRK is scared to work with
me, what to do?” Aamir said in an interview for CNN-IBN. Apparently,
his cousin, director Mansoor Khan, had originally wanted to make
Josh with both the Khans, but SRK opposed the idea.

Meghna Gulzar is still
hunting for the right actress to
play the lead role in her comedy
36-24-36 (obviously about
acquiring the perfect figure) as
Madhuri Dixit has turned the
project down. The actress does
not want to move out of the
US because of “family responsibilities”.
Gulzar has approached
Tabu and Juhi Chawla –
one wonders, though, if they
fit the role!
He won hearts with his brilliant portrayal in Taare Zameen Par,
but Darsheel Safary is just 12 years old. And like any 12-year-old,
he wants to have a blast during school vacations. His parents have
taken a conscious decision to ensure that he gets some down time.
Darsheel has also turned down several appearances on reality
shows. Last month, the Labour commisioner of Mumbai issued
notices to television shows featuring well known child actors
under the Child Labour Act of 1996, asking the producers to
explain “if the work environment was conducive for the
children and confirm there was no violation of any law”.
This, according to the city psychiatrists, is a positive move,
as many of the children find it difficult to balance their
lives with studies and acting, while their parents and
producers push them to cash in on the fame.
In 1962, Dilip Kumar was offered Lawrence of Arabia before
the role went to Omar Shariff, but he does not regret turning
David Lean down. “When one has the freedom to choose, one
should choose what is best for him. I met David Lean a few times,
informally, with my dear friend Hiten Chowdhury. We developed
a healthy mutual respect for the work we had both done in cinema.
“But at that juncture I was happy and content with the success I
was enjoying in India and not inclined to contemplate working in
an alien environment and ethos. David understood me perfectly.
We continued to be in touch for a long time.”
