He was only a
young man – a
rough-andtough
looking 21 year
old – intelligent, but
troubled and confused.
Every once in a
while he would walk through
our doors into the Hope
Centre, perch himself on a
chair next to me and vent. He
let out his frustrations and his
bottled-up anger inside.
Then I didn’t see him for a
while, a long while. And then
one morning, as I was drinking
coffee, I heard his name on the
radio. He had been charged
with murder.
But I didn’t hear from him
until one day I received a letter
from prison. In this letter, he
asked, “Can you come visit me?
I need help. I need someone
to talk with.”
I arranged a visit, brought a
Bible to give him and challenged
him to read it. He began
reading and the Lord Jesus

The power to change lives
began to confront him with his
guilt and need for repentance.
He wrote me again, saying, “I
feel like I’m at the end of my
rope... I wish that God would
help me to give in, totally, to
believe in His power. I’m
actually ashamed that I feel this
way.”
Then he made a collect call.
I said to him, “You need to ask
God to help you give in totally,
admit your sin, ask Him to
forgive you, and to make you
into a new person from the
inside.
“You need to ask Him; I
can’t make you do that.”
He did. God led him to read
these lines from the Bible:
“Do you not know that the unrighteous
will not inherit the kingdom
of God? Do not be deceived... And
such were some of you. But you were
washed, but you were sanctified, but
you were justified in the name of the
Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our
God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
When he read the words
“such were some of you. But you were
washed…”, he called me immediately
and said, “I felt the light
of Jesus coming into me. I had
hope. I knew I could be forgiven
in Jesus.’
He then pleaded guilty,
resting his entire case in the
hands of the Lord Jesus.
He discovered hope and

we remain
in contact
with each
other.
