Hello ji!
We all love a good, old-fashioned love story.
Specially in this month when we celebrate
Valentine’s Day. And they don’t come
sweeter than this one, sent to me by my sister-in-law
Nita.
An elderly gentleman in his 80s went to a clinic to
have stitches removed from his thumb. He arrived at
8:30 and requested that they see him quickly as he
had a 9 am appointment. A nurse took his vital signs
and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an
hour before someone would be able to see him – it
was a busy morning at the clinic.
Noticing that he was checking his watch frequently,
she decided that since she was not busy with another
patient, she would evaluate his wound. It was well
healed, and she talked to one of the doctors, got the
needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress
his wound.
While doing this, she engaged him in conversation.
She asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment
that morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman said no. He needed to go to the
nursing home to have breakfast with his wife. The
nurse then inquired about his wife’s health. He said
that she had been there for a while and that she had
Alzheimer’s.
The nurse asked if his wife would be upset if he
was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew
who he was, that she had not recognized him in five
years now. The nurse was surprised. “And you still
go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who
you are?” she asked.
He smiled as he patted her hand and said, “She
doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is”.
True love is neither physical nor romantic. True
love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be,
and will not be.
Our cover feature this month is also about love –
another kind of love. Our love for ourselves and for
fellow desis. Is the fact that some desis feel other
desis do not respect them reflective of our lack of
respect for ourselves, of a lack of self-love?
Something to reflect on in this season of love.

Home-grown talent
I loved reading about all the
new desi authors (A brave new
word, January). It’s true, there are
so many new writers of desi origin
these days! Earlier, one felt
a thrill when one located a book
in English by a desi author. Now,
book stores are filled with books
by desi authors, home-grown in
Canada and elsewhere. I guess
it was bound to happen – there
are just so many of us on the
planet! – SOUVIK PAL, VIA E-MAIL
The writing is on the wall
What about other languages?
While we are celebrating all these new desi writers, it would be interesting
to check the state of health of the writing in India’s many other languages.
Once we boasted a rich talent of writers in Bangla, Urdu, Gujarati, Hindi,
Tamil, etc. How popular is writing in these languages now? On a recent visit
to India, I had the hardest time locating a few books by known Hindi authors
to bring back for my mother. – UPENDRA PANDIT, VIA E-MAIL
Same time, next year!
Re A time to reinvent yourself,
January: Do a repeat feature with
the same people next year – see
how far they succeeded in keeping
their New Year resolutions. I
never manage to do so, and it will
be fun to see how many more are
like me!
– SURILI PRADHAN, VIA E-MAIL
Better luck next time!
The Desi News promotion for
passes to Chandni Chowk to China
was such a fun idea. I really, really
wanted to win and take my
mom to the premiere. But since I
didn’t win, I hope you will have
more such promotions in future.

Grant’s Community Achiever Yasmin
Ratansi is someone the whole community
is rightly proud of. She has achieved
her success through determination and
making the most of every opportunity
as she urges others to do in Take advantage
of every opportunity (January). She
should be more vocal about her achievements,
though, as other desi politicians
seem to get a lot more face time in the
local media.

A star is born
It did my heart good to see the feature
on Manoj Amarnani (From Mississauga to
Mumbai, January). The young man has his
values intact and will make his parents
proud. – OBAID KHAN, VIA E-MAIL
